Frequently asked questions
When is my MOT due?
Enter your registration number above and this tool will tell you your exact MOT expiry date and how many days remain. You can also check for free on the GOV.UK MOT check service.
Is my vehicle MOT exempt?
Vehicles under three years old from the date of first registration are exempt from MOT testing. Some historic vehicles (manufactured before 1977) are also exempt. This tool will flag if your vehicle is likely exempt based on its year of manufacture.
Can I drive without an MOT?
You can only drive a vehicle without a valid MOT to a pre-booked MOT test appointment, and only if the vehicle is roadworthy. Driving without a valid MOT at any other time is an offence that can result in a fine of up to £1,000.
How early can I get my MOT done?
You can have your MOT test carried out up to one calendar month (minus one day) before the current certificate expires. If you do this, the new certificate will run from the expiry date of the old one, so you do not lose any days.
How can I get MOT reminders for my fleet?
Kedra tracks MOT expiry dates across your entire fleet and sends automated reminders before anything lapses. Add vehicles by registration and Kedra pulls MOT data directly from DVSA.
What happens if I drive without an MOT?
Driving without a valid MOT certificate is a criminal offence in the UK. You can receive a fixed penalty notice of up to £1,000. Your vehicle insurance may also be invalidated, meaning you could face further penalties for driving without insurance. If the vehicle is involved in an accident, you may be personally liable for all costs.
How long does an MOT last?
An MOT certificate is valid for 12 months from the date of the test. For new vehicles, the first MOT is not required until three years after the date of first registration. After that, an MOT must be renewed annually to keep the vehicle legal for road use.
Can I tax my car without an MOT?
In most cases, no. You cannot tax a vehicle online or at a Post Office without a valid MOT certificate (or an exemption). The only exception is if the vehicle is brand new and still within its first three years, or if it falls into an exempt category. You must get a valid MOT before taxing the vehicle.
What is checked in an MOT test?
An MOT test covers a comprehensive list of safety and environmental checks. Key areas include brakes, tyres, lights, steering and suspension, bodywork and structure, exhaust emissions, windscreen and wipers, mirrors, seat belts, horn, and fuel system. The test does not cover the engine, clutch, or gearbox condition.
How do I find my MOT test number?
Your MOT test number (also called the MOT certificate number) is printed on your MOT certificate. It is a 12-digit number. You can also find it by checking your MOT history on the official GOV.UK MOT history service. The test number is useful when renewing your vehicle tax online.
Everything You Need to Know About MOT Testing
MOT testing requirements in the UK
The MOT test is an annual inspection required by law for most vehicles used on UK roads. It checks that your vehicle meets minimum safety and environmental standards. The test covers brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, exhaust emissions, bodywork, windscreen, mirrors, seat belts, and more. It is carried out at authorised MOT testing centres approved by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency).
The requirement applies to cars, motorcycles, vans, and other light vehicles over three years old. Heavy goods vehicles and public service vehicles have separate testing arrangements. Without a valid MOT certificate, you cannot legally drive on public roads (except to a pre-booked MOT appointment) and you cannot renew your vehicle tax. Our fleet compliance guide covers all the compliance obligations UK fleet operators need to be aware of.
New vehicle MOT exemption explained
Brand new vehicles registered in the UK are exempt from MOT testing for the first three years from the date of first registration. This means if you buy a new car, you do not need to get an MOT until the third anniversary of its registration date. After that, an MOT test is required every 12 months.
Some other vehicle categories are also exempt. Historic vehicles manufactured before 1977 do not require an MOT, though they must still be kept in a roadworthy condition. Certain types of vehicles, including electric goods vehicles and tractors, may have different exemption rules. Our MOT checker above will flag if a vehicle is likely exempt based on its year of manufacture. For fleet managers adding new vehicles, Kedra automatically detects MOT exemptions when you add a vehicle by registration.
What happens when your MOT expires?
When your MOT expires, your vehicle is no longer legal to drive on public roads. You may only drive it directly to a pre-booked MOT test at an authorised testing station, and only if the vehicle is roadworthy. Driving with an expired MOT at any other time can result in a fine of up to £1,000.
An expired MOT also invalidates your vehicle insurance in many cases, as most policies require a valid MOT certificate. This means if you are involved in an accident with an expired MOT, you could face penalties for both no MOT and no insurance, as well as personal liability for any damage or injury caused. For fleet operators, an expired MOT on even one vehicle can create serious legal and financial exposure. Read our fleet compliance checklist for a complete overview of what to track.
MOT testing for fleet vehicles
Managing MOT dates across a fleet of vehicles is one of the most critical compliance tasks for any fleet operator. Missing a single MOT expiry can result in fines, invalidated insurance, and potential operator licence issues. The larger the fleet, the harder it becomes to track dates manually using spreadsheets or calendars.
Kedra's MOT tracking feature solves this by pulling MOT data directly from the DVSA MOT History API. When you add a vehicle by registration, Kedra retrieves the full MOT history including test results, advisories, and odometer readings. It then tracks the expiry date and sends automated email reminders before the MOT is due. The compliance dashboard gives you a single view of every vehicle's MOT, tax, and insurance status, colour-coded by urgency.
How to never miss an MOT date
The simplest way to avoid missing an MOT is to set up reminders well in advance. You can book your MOT up to one month (minus one day) before the current certificate expires without losing any days on the new certificate. This gives you flexibility to find a convenient testing slot.
For individual vehicle owners, you can use this free MOT checker to look up your expiry date and set a calendar reminder. You can also check our free DVLA vehicle checker for additional vehicle details including tax status.
For fleet managers handling multiple vehicles, manual reminders quickly become unmanageable. Kedra automates this entirely. It monitors MOT expiry dates, sends automated compliance alerts at configurable intervals, and flags overdue vehicles on the dashboard. Combined with daily vehicle checks, it provides a complete compliance management system for UK fleets.
Whether you manage 3 vehicles or 300, staying on top of MOT dates is non-negotiable. Use this free tool to check individual vehicles, or try Kedra free to automate compliance tracking for your entire fleet.
